Eyewear Fit for an Olympian

The success of Team GB in the Olympic games will have inspired to take up a sport so it’s important to consider how eyesight can have an impact on people’s sporting ability.

Whether you play sports just for fun or professionally, choosing the right sports eyewear will not only protect your eyes from impact and the harmful effects of UV radiation, it can also enhance performance.

In some sports, such as a contact sport like rugby and martial arts, contact lenses are more suitable to maximise peripheral vision and help reduce the risk of injury or the eyewear falling off. For those not suitable for contact lenses there are some very good alternatives like sports goggles, which are ideal for children who may be too young to start wearing contact lenses.

Tushar Majithia, Managing Director of Lunettes Opticians in Sleaford, Lincolnshire offered his expert advice for the best eyewear when playing different sports.

“The ideal sports eyewear should be well fitting, comfortable and not fall off during physical activity. Good quality wraparound styles are designed to ensure that that they do not distort or restrict peripheral vision.

“But each sport has its own visual requirements and there is a variety of lenses designed to optimise vision, reduce glare and enhance performance. Most leading lens manufacturers have introduced the sport specific lenses with a range of colour filters optimising the vision for activities such as cycling, watersports, golf or skiing, some available in prescription and non-prescription.

“A good example for cyclists is the Oakley ‘Prizm’ Road lens which helps the wearer identify the subtle changes in texture of road surfaces helping the react faster, and the @Prizm’ Golf lens enhances contrast giving a better separation of colour and improves perception of depth and distance. For watersports, skiing and snowboarding a polarised lens is recommended to help reduce the effects of glare from the sunlight reflecting off the surface of water or snow.”

Lunettes Opticians in Sleaford was first established in 1992 by Tushar Majithia. The group later opened practices in Grantham and Ruskington, where they provide NHS and private eye tests, colour vision testing, contact lenses and are specialists in low vision treatment.
