Schoolchildren Help Give The Gift Of Sight For Christmas

Eighteen primary schools throughout Lincolnshire have helped give the gift of sight this Christmas by collecting over 1000 old or unwanted glasses for charity as part of Lunettes Opticians annual recycling campaign.

Lunettes Opticians in Sleaford, Ruskington and Grantham teamed-up with local primary schools and Vision Aid Overseas charity to help people in developing countries who are unable to receive eye care.

The international charity helps over 13 million children and adults who desperately need good eyesight in order to gain a valuable education, which in turn helps in the fight against poverty.

Tushar Majithia, Managing Director of Lunettes Opticians in Ruskington, Sleaford and Grantham, said: “This is the third year we have run our glasses campaign within regional schools and we’ve had even more support than ever.
“We’re all impressed that the schools again managed to collect over 1,000 glasses which will go a long way in helping many people to see again. On behalf of Lunettes Opticians and Vision Aid Overseas I’d like to thank all the schools and pupils who took part and to everyone who donated their unwanted glasses for such a worthwhile appeal.”
Lunettes Opticians also raised £106.20 by carrying out repairs and servicing spectacles for patients and asking them to donate to Vision Aid Overseas. And optometrists from Lunettes went in to schools and gave a talk to pupils about the importance of eye health.

Sheriden Edwards, Headteacher of Denton CE Primary School in Grantham, said: “The students were shocked to learn many children in Africa struggled to see properly, so were excited to be part of the ‘Vision Aid’ glasses recycling scheme helping to transform someone’s life with the gift of clear vision.  It put a whole new ‘focus’ on recycling!”

Helen Duckett: Headteacher of Ruskington Winchelsea Primary school in Sleaford said:  “We are always pleased to be involved in community projects and believe it helps the children to understand how their actions can help others less fortunate, and also give them an understanding of how others life compared with their own lives.”

Katie Brockington, Headteacher of Caythorpe Primary School in Grantham, added:  “The Vision Aid Overseas Campaign was a great way for our pupils to learn about the importance of looking after their own eyes and getting them checked regularly at the opticians.”

A spokesperson for Vision Aid Overseas said: “On behalf of Vision Aid Overseas, I would like to thank Lunettes Opticians and all the schools involved for their support. It is incredible to see that so many schools got involved and we are extremely grateful for all their fundraising and awareness raising activities which will help us continue to bring affordable eye care services and glasses to some of the world’s poorest communities.”
